Aaliyah Dana Haughton, better known as Aaliyah, was an R&B singer, model, dancer and actress. Often dubbed as the “Princess of R&B” and the “Queen of Urban Pop”, Aaliyah was versatile in every way possible when it came to her music and her style. As an African-American woman of Native American descent, Aaliyah used her background and upbringing to influence her music.
As a young girl, I remember hearing my older sister play ‘Back and Forth’ and ‘Four Page Letter’ in her room and I recall bursting into her room to found out the name of the singer. I just had to know who she was. Turns out that it was Aaliyah. Aaliyah, also known for her natural beauty and long layered hair, inspired me to wear my long natural hair straight for a short period of time. I thought I was doing something then LOL! If you ask me, Aaliyah was beautiful in every way. There is no doubt about it.
Sadly, her life was cut short at the age of 22 in 2001. I can still remember riding to school that morning and hearing over the radio that she had died in a plane crash after filming her music video for ‘Rock the Boat.’ I felt so sad hearing that because I liked her music and her down to earth personality. It has been over 15 years since Aaliyah passed, but her music, beauty and legacy still continues to live on.
Until next time…
